Age Verification Online: Can the Internet Prove Who You Are?

Published · 18 min

Watch on YouTube

A website asks you to prove how old you are before it will let you in. This video follows how that became normal: three technical approaches now in use - government-ID upload, AI face-scan age estimation, and device-level age signals - and the laws now forcing sites and app stores to use them.

It covers Britain's Online Safety Act, whose age-assurance duties became enforceable on 25 July 2025, and Ofcom's first finished enforcement case against AVS Group (a £1,000,000 fine, 4 December 2025). It covers Australia's world-first under-16 social media ban, which took effect 10 December 2025 and saw about 4.7 million accounts closed within its first two days. It covers America's patchwork of 27 state laws requiring age checks for adult content, and the US Supreme Court's 2025 ruling in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton, which upheld Texas's law 6-3.

It covers the newer idea of checking age once, at the device: Apple's Declared Age Range API, required in Texas from June 2026; Google's Play Age Signals API, rolling out worldwide from July 2026; and Colorado's own device-level law, passed and signed though not yet in force. And it covers the European Union's Digital Identity Wallet, due in every member state by the end of 2026, and its simpler age-only 'mini-wallet', piloted in five countries.

Throughout, it weighs the child-safety case against what each method now holds on every adult who passes the check too: a scanned ID, a face photograph, or an age band tied to a named device. Every figure is on screen with its source and date; several claims in the original brief - including a rounded EU deadline, a misdescribed Colorado bill, an inaccurate 'renamed' New York law, and an unconfirmed EU pilot country - were corrected or cut after being checked against primary sources on the day of writing.
