6G: What Would Another Mobile Generation Actually Fix?
On 2 September 2026, the European Commission reported that MasOrange and Ericsson had tested antennas in the 6 gigahertz band in Spain, moving from 64 to 256 transmit-and-receive elements. It is a trial of hardware, not a 6G service, and Spain has not even licensed the band for mobile use yet. This video explains what that trial actually shows, and sets it against the real history and performance of every mobile generation before it.
It covers what a 'generation' means technically - a new agreed radio standard, then new handsets and new mast equipment - from 1G's analogue voice in the 1980s, through 2G's digital voice and SMS (GSM, 1 July 1991), 3G's mobile data (NTT DoCoMo, 1 October 2001), 4G's broadband speed (TeliaSonera LTE, 14 December 2009), to 5G's launch (South Korea, April 2019) and its actual scorecard: 54% of the world covered by the end of 2024, over 80% in high-income countries against under 5% in low-income ones, and a 66%/40% urban-rural split.
Then who decides what 6G is - 3GPP, which writes the specification, and the ITU-R, which set six usage scenarios in Recommendation M.2160 (June 2023) and will judge submissions against them. The spectrum fight over 6-8 gigahertz spectrum, decided in part at WRC-27 in Shanghai in October-November 2027. The equipment actually changing today - massive MIMO antennas, AI-native networks, integrated sensing. And the standards timeline running to 2029-2030, set against roughly 300 million people with no mobile internet coverage at all and a 5G job still unfinished.
Every figure in this video is traced to a named, dated source in its fact sheet.
