Sand Batteries: Can Stored Heat Replace Fossil Fuels?

Published · 18 min

Watch on YouTube

Sand batteries store energy as heat. Can that replace fossil fuels? We follow the energy through Finnish district heating, the materials inside a store, the heat customer and the economics.

Operating heat projects are distinguished from the Valkeakoski electricity-recovery pilot, which has no turbine. Projected electrical efficiency is separated from combined useful heat and power. Pornainen first-year results are developer-reported, not described as an independent audit. Cost examples are illustrative.
