Lab-Grown Diamonds: The End of Natural Diamonds?

Published · 23 min

Watch on YouTube

A lab-grown diamond is diamond. Factories can reproduce the crystal, but they cannot reproduce its geological past. What does that do to an industry built around rarity?

We explain HPHT presses and CVD gas growth, trace Frances Gerety and N.W. Ayer’s advertising for De Beers, and examine the historic control of rough supply. Then we follow the price collapse, the Lightbox withdrawal, the announced two-year Venetia pause and The Knot’s engagement-ring survey.

Updated source check: Edahn Golan’s 7 October 2026 report shows a small quarterly rise in round wholesale prices after the long decline. Retailer costs are distinguished from customer ring prices. Mining employment proposals are distinguished from completed job losses. De Beers’ market explanations are identified as company claims.
